Oomichi road

Oomichi road is the main road which penetrates the center of the town from the tide gate called Akamon which was installed in the cross passage of the Hiromura Seawall in 1926 to Hiro Hachiman-jinja Shrine on the hill. At the time of the tsunami in 1854, people escaped along Oomichi road from lowlands to high grounds, relying on the fire which Hamaguchi Goryo set fire to rice sheaves. Since then, we have set up Oomichi road as the axis of the evacuation route and we are promoting the town development that considers the evacuation of the tsunami by linking the small paths. At the “Inamura-no-Hi Matsuri (festival)” held in October every year, people with torch-light walk Oomichi road in procession. The evacuation drills are done in Oomichi road after “Tsunami Matsuri (festival)” held in November.
