Tombstone of Hamaguchi Goryo

The principal, Kinta, who succeeded the Hamaguchi family, asked to create the content to Katsu Kaishu who was deeply acquainted with Hamaguchi Goryo. The tombstone was built in March 1893 in the corner of Hiro Hachiman-jinja Shrine that has a view of Hiromura seawall. Characters honoring the virtues of Goryo are engraved. The writing was done by a calligrapher, Iwaya Ichiroku who was a member of Peers by the imperial and also one of Sanpitsu (3 famous calligraphers) of Meiji. The carving characters were done by Miyakinen who was a calligraph carver in Tokyo. Regarding the tsunami in 1854, Goryo was introduced in the expression that “you set fire to rice sheaves, brightened the circumference, people ran away by relying on it and were saved from death.” In the 50 years after the death of Goryo in 1934, “The venerable Hamaguchi Goryo 50th anniversary festival” was held in front of the tombstone.
